Set in the 1930's the story takes place in an old fashioned English country house where a family has invited many of their friends up for a weekend shooting party. The story centers around the McCordle family, particularly the man of the house, William McCordle. Getting on in years William has become benefactor to many of his relatives and friends. As the weekend goes on and secrets are revealed, it seems everyone, above stairs and below, wants a piece of William and his money, but how far will they go to get it...?

I'm not a big fan of Robert Altman. I usually remote from most of his films, no doubt after experiencing Quintet and Popeye years ago. But I must say that I loved Gosford Park. Personally, I think the movie is too simple for its own good. The resolution is also a matter of fact, no doubt with regard to how the rest of the movie was filmed in a quasi deliberately spontaneous, free flowing manner. I wanted to end it have been less melodramatic. But with that said, I still think this movie is beautiful and bright. It's like seeing a painting, where the landscape and people move on. I can not wait to buy the DVD. One day when I will have an HDTV, I'm going to play GP DVD and watch just like a painting.

Roughly the first two thirds of this movie, I found it slow. He was good, but the contrast between the aristocracy above and below the serfs seem a bit obvious and the plot does not seem to be going anywhere interesting. Then began to dawn on me that there was not much more in progress. I will refer to only one more interesting (spoilers below). The character Emily Watson, in the bathroom, he said, "Why is everything about them?" She refers to the aristocracy and how the service of its subsidiary obtained through the enjoyment of them. But the point is that it was not all about them. Employers often are begging the players to listen to gossip. The employers are the ones who should sit with respect, while music is playing, the service comes to the dance. And, ultimately, one of the aristocrats is murdered because of the affairs of the servants. It is a particularly nice touch that Kristen Scott Thomas is only a dimly aware that such cases are rejected as irrelevant and, even after they have just become her life upside down. The film came together in a way I found very satisfactory. As others have said, is not on the murder mystery. I do not recommend this to everyone, but I'm anxious to see again.
