Sometimes, when I see a movie i leave the theater with a strange feeling. Not knowing exactly what i saw was fair. It was not great, nor bad. And soon, within fifteen minutes of my departure from my seat, I can start to have problems to tell the story of the film or even saying what was coming. Gosford Park is one of those films. Robert Altman shows that it is certainly a very competent film-maker here. Both technically complete and interesting narrative of this movie is full of leadership skills. It certainly does not lack any of the actors, this movie is well acted throughout. That is not really surprising taking into account credit, a long line of fine players. The story is nothing revolutionary, but very interesting said. It is given from two perspectives, first, and then the noble people of their agents. A relationship that is also causing quite comedy. So with all that I have previously mentioned this should be a great movie. Well, I would say yes and two no. While I have found that they have many qualities there is something about all that does not excite me. Sometimes, when I see a movie I have the feeling that the director has almost worked very hard trying to refine his style. I have that feeling here. The film is almost too, like someone is trying too hard. Or maybe it is just me. For whatever reason this polished and well thought through the movie just does not quite do it for me, although it is certainly worthy of entertainment for as long as it lasted. Type I 6 / 10. |
I had to use subtitles in English from my American ear does not catch all the subtitles of the King's English. Apart from that I enjoyed watching this movie at least a dozen times - always catching the subtitles I missed before. It resembles the search for an exquisite painting again and again - gathering ever more recognition. All the performances were excellent, but Maggie Smith's reaction to cup of coffee dumped in the lap of Weismann was in the price Valet. Best scene: Mirrin between Eileen Atkins and Helen towards the end of the film, Mrs. Wilson in the room where it faces the definitive loss of his son. Helen was the performance right through the roof for me - what a treatment. Lance Hauser |
A beautiful film, and in equal measure, a spectacular maze. At first glance, the anatomy of a world. After exploring a deep crisis. Ultimately the fall of a universe. The story is ambiguous and the film is an impressive collection of lights, rumors, great players and nostalgic flavor. It is a subtle blend between the Eugène Ionesco and the Russian theater old memories in a decent English. An ambiguous war behind the social mask, a strange silence on the expectation of the skin, an amorphous desire and duty. The captains and officers are organs of one body. His putrefaction is the theme of the movie and the death of the old god-infamous pretext final to remember. It is the image of the final. The end of an era, the end of a fundamental crisis, put an end to the illusion of a cage. Thompson's play or the exploration of the last vestiges of Henry Denton, the indifference of the wife of William or the struggle of Isobel are parts of the final act of the exposure of the falsehood of the corpse. "Gosford Park" is its labyrinth of special status. Slices of "Remains of the Day" or sarcastic view of the British aristocracy, the personal stamp of a great leader and the subtle performance of an extraordinary plays, the way of the wishes, dreams of revenge, hypocrisy drops of a formal decent universe are the ingredients of this unique film. And, as in each maze, which is essential is to whenever the Minotaur. |
I must say I am always surprised when I here the word "boring" when a movie has moments that are slow. In real life, every moment is spent alone or with other riveting, heart pounding, spell-binding? I do not think so. But when this is reflected in a film that is clearly inviting us to spend a night at home with a young and motley assortment of guests, when there is a calm, uh oh! That is my impression of this table, we are spending a little time with these people listening in on their conversations. We also have heard gossip as the servants, who generally know more than the goings-on that their employers. possible spoiler * * Curiously, the agent mousiest the lot was the one who was the most curious and, ultimately, the more he knew. Hmmmmmm. I do not think that this film was rated more. I think at this time the director has nothing to prove. He is only making their films to their liking. Since Altman never seemed concerned about mainstream, big box office money-making machines, this kind of film is classic Altman. |
This film of Robert Altman is one of the best films of the last decade. The main plot and many sub-plots seem slow to most people uninitiated, but for those who understand the British class system and its disappearance is the real grip and a fun movie. The performances by the entire British cast is much higher than would be given by our American friends. Maggie Smith, deserves a special mention for his excellent performance as the elderly aunt leech, and the timing of its lines is immaculate. The only criticism I have of the cast is why ............ Stephen Fry? Hugh Laurie would have been more appropriate for this role. Rating 10/10. |
Roughly the first two thirds of this movie, I found it slow. He was good, but the contrast between the aristocracy above and below the serfs seem a bit obvious and the plot does not seem to be going anywhere interesting. Then began to dawn on me that there was not much more in progress. I will refer to only one more interesting (spoilers below). The character Emily Watson, in the bathroom, he said, "Why is everything about them?" She refers to the aristocracy and how the service of its subsidiary obtained through the enjoyment of them. But the point is that it was not all about them. Employers often are begging the players to listen to gossip. The employers are the ones who should sit with respect, while music is playing, the service comes to the dance. And, ultimately, one of the aristocrats is murdered because of the affairs of the servants. It is a particularly nice touch that Kristen Scott Thomas is only a dimly aware that such cases are rejected as irrelevant and, even after they have just become her life upside down. The film came together in a way I found very satisfactory. As others have said, is not on the murder mystery. I do not recommend this to everyone, but I'm anxious to see again. |
