| "Legend" (1985) has to be one of the greatest fantasy films I've ever seen. It's better than "Willow" (1988) I do not like that much. Ridley Scott is the talent of blowing the minds only. He knows how to make a movie from scratch. After watching Alien, Blade Runner, Black Rain, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and, finally, Legend, I have seen how this great man is his vision and his style of cinema. When I first heard of the film, I did not even know Tom Cruise was in it. The score composed by Tangerine Dream fits perfectly the movie and helps tell the story. Ridley Scott's brother, Tony Scott has also made great movies: Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II and True Romance. The makeup effects are brilliant at the moment. Tim Curry reincarnation of Satan is quite disturbing and it plays a brilliant performance that is unforgettable. "Legend" is a movie that you can not miss the opportunity so if you see it anywhere on DVD, buy, and you will not regret it. |
| The 80s were a time when the genre became the most conventional fantasy. Dragon Slayer, History, Legend and Willow to name only a few opened the flood gates to a long list of clones of fantasy and animations. The legend was up there with the best of them. The basic story revolves around the basic story of good vs. evil, the loss of innocence and the manifestation of this evil from the Lord of Darkness himself. There was no cgi as it was the early eighties and that gives the film a very authentic feel. All the cast give good results, but Tim Curry steals the show as the Lord of Darkness. I do not think that his character could be anywhere near as scary if it was made with CGI. The score by Tangerine Dream (Scott, which is also used in Blade Runner) completes the experience and gives you all the dream as a quality almost like his dream of seeing a display on the screen. It is used a lot of car depreciation humor to lighten the mood for the young target audience was originally intended a. Unfortunately this does not always work and diminishes the experience a little escapist fantasy. Like Scotts Bladerunner masterpiece, see the two versions (There a lot of extra footage in the directors CUT) to fully appreciate this little gem. |
| If you see this movie, and you should see the directors not to cut the film version. The directors superior court has a soundtrack that is not stuck in the 80's not to mention, this version is not as Americanized as a cinema. However, 80 music for this movie is going quite well. If you, like me, have a fondness for Tom Cruise this is a movie for you! This shows that the young Tom Cruise before that success, and I believe this was his debut in a role. Before seeing this movie, however, you should not have too high expectations from it; if you do you may disappoint. But if you just saw with an open, and a little romance, mind, we have to sweep out only for a while ... |
| What I loved most about this movie is that it belongs to a middle ground. What I mean by this is that while the effects, sets and visuals of the era were outstanding, the film is meant not only to attract anyone. It is not a family film that claims feelings and thoughts (except the good vs evil), but that branches out in most reaches wild imagination. This is a "sect" because its movie screen is fantastic. The themes are simple. Good versus evil, hero and villain, a world of fantasy, true love. But what the director is achieved deeper, more disturbing, dark, and so much more pleasing to the eye then you might expect from a 'fairytale'. Even when scenes are bright and cheerful, that the sense of how fragile and how deadly are the characters. And when the scenes are dark and evil, can not protect your eyes or feel scared. You are prepared and can not look away. Is that these effects plays with the mind of exactly how a fantasy. You should be left in fear and confusion, and even more curious. The actors were great (Cruise, unfortunately, is my least favorite choice, and Tim Curry and the boy who played the Forest Sprite is the best way). Costumes, makeup, and are excellent overall. One of my "must see" for those who not only love 'cult' movies, but the love we feel for the film to be a part of it, and that inspired the left. |
