| Young Adam is a powerful and atmospheric drama set in the canals between Glasgow and Edinburgh during the 1950s. Ewan McGregor is Joe, a drifter working on a barge, when he and his boss, find a body in the canal. As he begins an affair with the wife river (Tilda Swinton), we find more information about his previous relationship with the drowned woman (Emily Mortimer). Adapted from the novel by Scottish Beat writer Alexander Trocchi, Young Adam is in a sense, a kitchen sink drama - a vivid image of the working class in his life unpleasant reality. One of the best examples of this type of film is at the Sala de Arriba (1959). However, young Adam has existentialist shades: Joe is alienated and passive, and not only his many sexual couplings offer little pleasure, but to reject the only thing that could redeem him, was condemned to a life without meaning. This may sound too depressing, but the screenwriter and director David Mackenzie's film gives great depth and sensuality. Very interesting. ****/***** Stars. |
| I am not surprised that this film has not become a darling of the viewing audience this time. It offers hard opinions, views this moment in fact, seen through the mists of history. The source novel is in post-World War II in Scotland. Joe, the anti-hero is a young man of his time. He is motivated by personal freedom, as he perceived, at any cost. He has sex always easily accessible; moves when it is not. He prefers to witness the death of other people who face their own responsibility for them. He is a coward, as it drifts from a barge transaction to transaction. He only feels safe when you're on the move. The film is all mood. There is cluttering the dialogue. It is visual, the ticket for his message to a visual age. The performances are uniformly strong. McGregor continues to stretch her range. Swinton is immersed in his character. Les Mullan is complex and believable. McKenzie of the direction is masterful. Creates a universe as a whole and draws the viewer in. If you're tired of reality TV and explosions, go see this movie. |

One afternoon they discover the corpse of a young woman floating in the water. Accident? Suicide? Murder? As the police investigate and suspect is arrested, we discover that Joe knows more than he is letting on. Gradually we learn of Joe's past relationship with the dead woman. Meanwhile an unspoken attraction develops between Joe and Ella, heightening the claustrophobic tensions in the confined space of the barge.
