Paul Cox triumphed again with this heartfelt yet unsentimental story of blindness. What is most remarkable about the film is its refusal to sentimentalize the effect of the blindness of its protagonist. A typical Hollywood treatment of the subject, would probably have been overly sentimental and melodramatic. In this sense, Cox evokes the subtlety and nuance to display a host of emotions. It's very human movie with a real sense of cinema. The surprisingly stable panoramic opening film is more than ever witness, challenging the viewer's participation in the film equated with art. Huppert gives a performance as usual, assisted by the Australian Family Cox cast so often used in his films. |
This is a brilliant work on sensory deprivation. Cox portrays the fear and uncertainty of loss of sight along its visual style. The Australians, in particular, Peter Weir, Bruce Beresford and Fred Schepisi have an amazing control and use of language film to portray the senses and emotions of his characters. Aussie recommend other selections as Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, The year of living dangerously, Breaker Morant, The Devil's Playground, The Songs of Jimmy Blacksmith. |
Cactus is a movie that you walk away thinking that he would like to see it again, because I think it ends so abruptly. The film moves quite slowly and everything I wanted more. More dialogue emotion that I wanted more of the main characters and Robert Colo. I really liked Robert Menzies could say that performance both in their expressions and not have to talk a lot and there is little talk in this movie. The landscapes and scenery are beautifully filmed, that makes you want to head to Australia is beautiful. The love scenes between Robert and Colo were very dark that I could not see anything that should have been filmed in another way because the love scenes add little to the film. In addition, there are other friends around that add little to guess in a way that exist for the narrative. I have not decided if I really liked this film or not, because it's right there, many of the cactus sitting around the house in Robert Green. Cactus expressed great excitement at the scenes of qualification, but the film as a whole loses much of its appeal. |
