This is a film that shows that mood and the music and texture are not enough to make a good film. Sure, the viewer is well to the many scenes of Los Angeles in the thirties - I especially liked the end of the trolley approaching the tunnel, and the tram going up the hill - but, in this sense a fine film is counterproductive , It creates a mood that "something will happen" - and nothing does. The script also has some feinting toward the action or plot or trauma - and again and again no delivery. Even the delivery of (I suppose) the theme of the film, the characters essential misfit. The main actors, both too good to his duties, not to proceed with any enforcement or agony, and the script does not expose us to everything. Now, Donald Sutherland? That's another story. His character was so well trained, so perfectly played, I wanted the camera to follow him. |
One of the other commentators mentioned that almost went out. If it had not been with my wife, who wanted to stay, I have left. It's a shame, too, because I think it could have been a good movie. But this is easily one of the worst scripts I've ever seen adapted. It starts nowhere and goes nowhere (I would say going nowhere fast, but really going nowhere slow ... painfully slow). Occasionally there are signs that something might happen, or that is potentially below a certain depth of the characters, but that's all we get - advice. Not a single payment or the revelation of the whole movie. Not that I need a spot in the plot to be entertaining ... I love a good meandering character study as much as the next indie Buff. However, these characters are added to anything. For the entire duration of the film does not care what happens to one of them. As a matter of fact, almost waiting to start dying, because at least one death could be more interesting to do their inexplicable behavior, which is so strange and unpredictable that you'd like to think that in itself would be compelling, but it is not. Instead of extravagant, Esquire-noir characters who act in the harsh fashion, simply recognize immediately for what it is: a group of talented players, but miscast, brooding and raising their eyebrows while reading the strange dialogue without a touch of context. All this for two plodding, painfully slow hours. Awful. |
