... that stands the test of time. This was immediately one of my favorite movies when I saw for the first time in 1982, at age 13. I decided to pick it when I saw that the recent release on DVD and still am not disappointed in the film. I'm not a fan of Warren Beatty by any stretch of the imagination, but this is a classic ... Charles Grodin and comes close to stealing the whole show. Highly recommended. The last 15 minutes of this movie move the hell of me all the time. I generally gravitate toward the "average" mark in the rating of films, but this, in my opinion, the rates of a 9/10....I quite liked better than "The Deer Hunter", which won the best picture Oscar for 1978. |
"Heaven can wait" is funny on a date kind of nice way. This is a remake of the popular 1941 movie "Here comes Mr. Jordan," and the film retains enough charm and good-hearted attitude of the original. No extravagant modern touches here, just old-fashioned and cut sweetly idealized romance and humor. It is strange to see a conventional comedy in the midst of one of the most convoluted decades in U.S. history. Maybe that's the reason the film was a runaway success, the film is, above all, pure escapism. The cast is excellent. Warren Beatty is very good as the young athlete who died prematurely because of a error heavenly. Dyan Canon and Charles Grodin is a pair of greedy leeches. Jack Warden is the Redneck Beatty coach, and James Mason is Mr. Jordan, special agent in charge of matters celestial. Only Julie Christie (very ugly hairdo) seems out of place (as Beatty's love interest). It's the sort of movie you want to do with someone you love. I can not explain all the Oscar nominations (including his Oscar for Best Art Director is disconcerting), but the film is certainly fine entertainment. I still think the 1941 film is better, though. |
Heaven can wait a landmark in Warren Beatty during the race. He produced, co-directed, co-wrote and starred in this comedy fantasy "and likely outcomes." Muhammad Ali originally was supposed to be cast for the role, but he turned it down, and it's a good thing he did. Beatty does a great job of handling the work of different three-character play, as quarterback goes to the employer and vice versa. Warren also has strong support from Julie Christie (who previously worked with Beatty), James Mason (as the mysterious Mr. Jordan), Dyan Cannon (as the businessman of the treacherous wife), Jack Warden (maximum coach Corkle) Buck Henry (as escorts), and Charles Grodin. This film certainly deserves that is 9 Nominations for the Oscars, but should have won more than one. |
This film is entertaining. I like Warren in this film and the script is so crazy that it works. It is not a message of hope in this movie, and we all need hope. Some parts of the film can be so funny, I like how to end it. The film finishes links lose any either. I remember the 78 and 79, the Rams were very good teams. 7 or 8 out of ten. |
I am a little shocked to see this movie with a low rating. Maybe people will appreciate more after that Chris Rock remake of the sale. I found this film to be incredibly entertaining, funny and sweet. It's a wonderful love story that is hard not to like. The wonderful cast for a whole was great and I thought the story was quite good, though not original, either. This is a great movie for a family to view as well. It's a very clean movie that has a good message and an interesting story. I liked this movie a lot, a well-deserved best picture nod from the Academy. 8 / 10. |
