| This is, perhaps, Woody Allen darkest history. No hope, no possibility of hope. Dreaming seems so pointless. The "I" syndrome. Nothing will come of it, and shame on you for wanting it. Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell are wonderful performances at low cost or no shine. Curiously, Allen shows a bit of compassion for his characters, but not respect. It seems that they despise. It is merit of the two actors who manage to stay with them without falling in love with them without even like much. The end, I felt, was a bit of face by one. Woody arrived at the gates of hell, but no business in. He leaves us the details of all that darkness. The film, however, Woody Allen is named, but it could have been a film by Basil Dearden and J Lee Thompson and I mean that as a compliment. |

When rich Uncle Howard (Wilkinson) comes to town and agrees to help them out, he admits his finances are under investigation, and he asks them to do him a favor and 'take care of' an old business relation to keep his trouble under wraps - he says that they're family, and since he always takes care of them, the least they could do is help him out this once, as they're the only ones he can trust. The film follows their struggle with the immorality of this request and how each brother chooses to deal with it.
