"Divorce" no. Despite the beauty of the local talent and the main actors, the director can not decide if this is a comedy in Paris or an adult tale of marital discord gone horrifically Askew. The interaction between the two women takes a good half-sisters and SOULMATES true. However, his romantic and marital complications come too fast with too little depth and the movie is a train wreck in the making. And soft, rich, cheating French are a rancid core of these movies. There is nothing new or interesting here. Too bad. 4 / 10. |
James Ivory is not exactly a policy-oriented filmmaker, but it took some courage, and it is a political message to release a film about the Americans living in Paris, and the clash between American culture and French in 2003. Although his film is more about family relationships and cultural perception, which says a lot about human beings is more important in relations between two nations that the policies of their leaders. Not that the relationship in the movie that are soft. I know both American and French mentalities, and I thank the mirror irony of this film puts on the faces of the two peoples. It is, without doubt, a certain amount of stereotyping in approach, but even so the characters are well constructed, to act with logic most of the time, some good and acting in a bi-lingual team helps a lot. Paris remains the best location to choose a movie for all time. The plot is a bit too long, and suffers from hollywooditis end, but overall satisfaction is the experience of cinema. I do not like the genre too romantic, but it was better than I expected. 7 out of 10 in my personal scale. |
Have you ever seen a movie where you are thinking of? And worse than that, after watching over, still felt the same? If you know what I am talking about you do not want to see this movie and end up feeling like you wasted two hours of your life. The story goes nowhere because it tries to explain so many stories that in the end you feel that the film has the name wrong. Despite all the stories about his trip are resolved in the end, it makes you feel you're watching a film different from that which started watching. The stories are linked so weak that it would have preferred to be completely separated. Not even recommended for a nothing-to-do Sunday afternoon. |
Merchant Ivory have been making films since the mid-1960s. A young pregnant woman visits her sister in Paris and begins a romance with an older man in French. There's more ... Easily one of this year's best movies. A great pleasure to see and hear. Final is set inside the Eiffel Tower. Woody Allen cast. Modine is just wrong in his role. Hundson I met once - she asked me to The Black Crowes at a night club in Dublin, where he was a prick. The last Merchant / Ivory film I liked was also in Paris ( "Jefferson"). 900 € for a meal! Great scenes, casting, writing, photography and acting. "The Divorce" is a pleasant surprise. |
There are a lot of comments about people here do not like this movie. I just saw and I loved it. I think it's very subtle, though. It's more fun to see if you have an understanding before, or at least to the introduction, the French lifestyle. It is a great satire on French and American cultures and their differences of nuance. Naomi Watts was very good in his role, and Kate Hudson was very good too. I must say I liked Leslie Caron as the French "simple" but better:) All said, I thought it was a wonderfully directed and somewhat quaint comedy-drama-satire. Another good job of Ivory and Merchant! |
