| completely mis-marketed as a prophecy-type horror film, there is much more than the present one that in most of the recent fear similar fare. first things first: there is no supernatural Hoo-hah. (ah, so refreshing.) is a disturbing, strange horror film plausible ... apparently made especially for parents. a plot of a few elements bothered me, and I felt there was a mistake (with a song by Dave Matthews, btw!), but overall it is an effective Chiller. Vera Farmiga as the increasingly unbalanced mother and Celia Weston as the holy-rolling, but really concerned mother-in-law are both excellent, and Sam Rockwell provides another subtle and convincing performance idiosyncratic. George Ratliff, who directed the fascinating documentary and discomfiting 2001, Hell House, shows promise as a narrative filmmaker. |
| This film has a quiet power to it and it's not like all the gore and torture porn that has lately been out there making money at the box office. Look, the masses want to be led like a child through most of the movies - lookee here - a point A to point B to point C - get it? He is good, the bad guy. Wow - who see his head explode. Yawn. I like too much gore, but also the love intelligent films that leave an audience that wants to believe - that wants to be challenged and has to try to find out what is true and what is not. Sam Rockwell, Vera F (as the wife), Dallas Roberst as the uncle and the youngest son Joshua as we all give excellent results. This is not a horror film in the sense of supernatural gore and trash. This is a family swirls out of control with post-partum depression, work pressure, meddling relatives, a troubled child and an infant crying - and it is left to us to decide what really happened. Slow, steady and, ultimately, powerful. If you have patience and love well-made, intense dramas - JOSHUA is for you. |
| This is a very strange and unconventional horror / thriller with great performances by Vera Farmiga and Jacob Kogan. In general, child actors in horror movies bug me (I'm looking at you, kid Omen again!), But this little friend I totally Creeper Martin Stephens in a kind of way. It is an excellent performance and one of the best things this offbeat film has going for it. This movie plot sounds like a typical "Bad Seed" field, but actually twists and turns into strange territory, disorienting the viewer to a point where you have no idea where it's going or when it has been. I'm still not sure whether I liked it, but it does make me feel incredibly difficult, and I think it's worth something. |
